Epson EP-879AB cartridges not recognized after a firmware update

Did your Epson EP-879AB stop recognizing cartridges after a firmware update? If an earlier firmware version is available for your printer, a downgrade may help restore recognition. First, check that the cartridges are seated correctly and their contacts and chips are clean and undamaged.

Why cartridges may stop being recognized

Some firmware updates can affect cartridges that worked before the update. A printer may display a message such as this example; the wording varies by model:

Ink cartridges cannot be recognized. Remove and reinstall the cartridges correctly or replace them. Epson recommends the genuine Epson cartridges listed above. Click [How to] for instructions on ink cartridge installation.

If the warning began after an update and the cartridges and contacts are in good condition, installing an earlier available firmware version may restore recognition. A firmware change cannot repair a faulty cartridge chip or a physical connection problem.
